Most compliance failures do not begin with a missing policy. They develop in the hidden space between what the handbook says, how systems are configured, what managers do, what gets documented, and what employees actually experience. This practical session shows HR professionals how to use a structured HR audit to identify those disconnects before they become employee complaints, agency investigations, litigation, or costly remediation.
Participants will examine four high-risk gap areas: worker classification, wage and hour practices, leave administration, and policy-practice inconsistency. The presentation also addresses onboarding, recordkeeping, multi-state compliance, employee relations, and manager consistency. Using a five-layer diagnostic model and a four-phase audit framework, attendees will learn how to scope an audit, review documents and actual practices, prioritize findings by risk, assign ownership, and build a 30/60/90-day remediation plan.
The session will be delivered through short case examples, guided self-assessment questions, audience polling, and an interactive gap-mapping exercise. Attendees will leave with a reusable five-layer gap map, a practical audit-scoping worksheet, and a remediation-prioritization framework they can apply within their own organizations. The program is educational and vendor-neutral; no products or services will be promoted.
Following this presentation, participants will be able to . . .
1. Distinguish among policy, system configuration, manager behavior, documentation, and day-to-day practice, and identify where misalignment creates compliance risk.
2. Evaluate common warning signs in worker classification, wage and hour, leave administration, onboarding, recordkeeping, employee relations, and multi-state compliance.
3. Apply a four-phase HR audit methodology to define scope, assess evidence, risk-rate findings, and develop a documented remediation plan.
4. Prioritize findings using legal exposure, workforce impact, recurrence, and remediation effort, then assign owners and realistic 30/60/90-day deadlines.
5. Establish a recurring monitoring and re-audit cadence that reduces policy-practice drift and supports continuous improvement.
